What makes the most wonderful time of year even better? Taking time to decorate and create a festive atmosphere in your home that will help to set the scene for beautiful memories to be formed.
Here are some ideas you can quickly and easily use to bring the Christmas spirit into every part of your home this season.
Whether you favour classic decor or something a little more unique, I’m confident you'll find something on this list that you'll want to incorporate.

Here are seven ways to give your home that festive feeling for the holidays!
1. Reflective Surfaces
Reflective surfaces spread light and make tiny spaces appear more spacious. Mirrors positioned near windows reflect light and unite a home's interior and exterior. A huge mirror can visually extend a space. It is also a way to reflect and to increase the impact of the beautiful décor you chose to create.
Use mirrors as trays! Most of us have spares sitting around somewhere. This is the time to bring them out and be creative. Use a mirror as a serving tray for baked goods, to create the base of a beautiful centrepiece or to contain pretty soaps and towels in your guest bathroom. Pull out the items you own with some extra sparkle. Bejewelled boxes and candle sticks can add a touch of decadence to table centres and holiday displays.
Light is reflected and transmitted by transparent objects. They increase illumination and give the appearance of potential space even in naturally bright areas.
2. Fresh Greenery
Bring the outdoors in. One of my most memorable childhood Christmas memories is having a German nanny who introduced me to the idea of using fresh greenery inside the house to create beautiful bouquets in vases and in baskets. Most homes are brimming with baskets and empty vases, and during the season, they become the perfect vessels for freshly cut boughs, berries, and pinecones.
Outside tall conifers to tiny evergreens, are available in a multitude of silvers and golds and greens and all perform well in assorted festive decorations.
Visit your local markets, farm stands, and garden centres to find natural festive décor. The feel and scent of a fresh Christmas tree can be used to identify a good one. Instead of choosing one that is dry or brittle, seek one that is fragrant and sticky. It will stay fresh longer and will hold its scent for a longer period.
After conditioning the clippings, use an anti-desiccant spray to keep them from drying out. This aids the greenery to retain moisture by sealing the pores on the leaves and bark. Fresh greenery will survive around two weeks indoors; in colder climates, it will last longer. Greenery should be displayed out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources and should be misted daily to prolong the life of the cuttings.
3. Candles
Candles are one of the most effective methods to enhance the environment throughout the holiday season.
The festive fragrances of cinnamon, pine, and berries can fill your home with a festive atmosphere. Individual candles in your windows and throughout your home are an excellent way to create a warm atmosphere.
It is easy to build a centrepiece out of these holiday favourites in the middle of your table. Large groups give your arrangement a more dramatic aspect, making it festive - excellent for the holiday season.
Pine, cranberry, cinnamon, and apple pie are all Christmas scents that can bring a subtle yet magical touch to your home.
Candles strewn about the house help to create a sense of cosiness, as well as a Christmas mood and memories. Even the smell of mulled wine can transport you back to a childhood Christmas gathering.
4. Theme Decor Items
Festive and holiday-themed decor items are truly what gives a home its holiday vibe. When preparing for the holidays, it's a great idea to seek out such items to bring the look together and get ready for the holiday spirit.
An easy way to introduce Christmas décor in your home is by adding a few festive throw pillows. Pillows can add Christmas colours, or themes, or perhaps to add a little more sparkle or texture.
The choice is always yours, and you should try to pick things that go well with your existing décor to keep elegance and harmony in check.
Beyond hanging stockings on the fireplace, you can dress your mantle with candles, garland and lights and add Christmas décor or winter themed items at your hearth. Think baskets stuffed with cozy textured blankets, lanterns, vases full of greenery…
5. Wreaths
An easy way to make your home seem more festive is to hang a wreath on the door. This will instantly feel inviting to your guests and anyone coming by for a visit over the holidays. Place a wreath or other form of seasonal swag on any of your doors. Begin at the front door to greet visitors, then move on to the back door. Wreaths can also be hung over the mantel, in front of windows, and on the doors of bedrooms. They are a beautiful way to bring some holiday vibes into your kitchen as they may be hung in a window or against a decorative hood fan.
Wreaths come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They can be made of pine, holly, grapevine, and decorated with multiple textures and materials including berries, fruit, pine cones, raffia, ornaments, birds, pictures. Many artificial wreaths can last for years so be sure to store them carefully to preserve them season after season.
6. Ornaments
Ornaments are a way to get your home ready for the holidays very quickly. Trees are at the centre of most of the decorating that happens any household and remains a classic and timeless way to showcase a variety or different Christmas themed décor.
You don't even have to keep to red and green when it comes to the palette. Pick options that go with the holiday motif, and incorporate themes and items that have meaning to you. If you can't locate something that looks perfect with the colours already in your home, metallic silver, gold, or rose gold can be a good option.
You can go sentimental with items from your past, incorporate fun themes, or food for example or stick to design that feels elegant or glamorous. The options for tree décor is limitless.
7. Luxurious Fabrics and Textures
Winter is a wonderful time to incorporate luxurious fabrics such as velvet and satin. The texture and shine bring a degree of elegance perfect for making a room feel festive. Extra blankets and throws with heavier textures or fur looks or feels bring visual warmth to any room and demonstrate our desire to be hospitable and offer comfort.
Many homes today feature neutral colours and have trended away from incorporating the traditional reds and greens often deemed to be Christmas colours. If too much colour is uncomfortable for you, or you prefer a more simple and elegant feel, fabric is a great way to level up your traditional décor and make it feel more welcoming and festive.
