Grey is a great neutral colour that works well with many other colours in interior design but do carefully think about how and where you want to use it.

When the world shut down due to Covid in March of 2020, no one anticipated that we would be spending most of our time in our homes for more than a year. A lot has happened since then and the fields of landscape design and interior design have only gotten busier.

Some of the things that we have become more aware of are how our personal spaces make us feel and how challenging it can be to live, work and play in the same spaces. Mental health is now at the forefront of many discussions we are having and the way. One of the nicest compliments I have ever received on my home was when a new acquaintance once arrived and announced that my home made her feel as though she had just received a nice warm hug. Nothing could have warmed my heart more. Colour is one of the most obvious things that impact how we feel in a space and both interior designers and branding companies know that there are feeling evoked by different colours.

While grey has been a popular choice for interior spaces for years, I think it has mainly been because it feels neutral and safe, rather than inviting. Having lived in the Pacific Northwest for most of my life grey is an all too common colour. Living where the rainy season and dark grey skies can span October to March means that there is plenty of time to feel drab and listless. Grey is a colour of darkness, loss and depression and for

me, not a first choice when it comes to making a space feel warm and inviting. According to the North American Mental Health Professional Advice Council, (February14, 2020), grey is a dull, moody, and sad colour that affects the mind and body by causing unsettling feelings. Too much grey creates feelings of sadness and

depression.”

Does this mean I recommend not using grey in your home? Not at all.

Grey is a great neutral that works well with many other colours but do carefully think about how and where you want to use it.

Do you want grey to be the dominant colour in your kitchen or main living space, probably not. If you do use grey make sure that you are using more joyful colours such as yellow or orange, or soothing colours such as green, and blue, or warming it up with wood.

How does grey make you feel and are you ready to do away with it?
